Consumer products need to be tested by real people before they are committed to production. Ergonomics, grip, button feel, assembly sequence, and dozens of other factors that are difficult to evaluate from a CAD model become immediately obvious when a physical product is in someone's hands. Additive manufacturing produces functional prototypes that can be tested, handled, and evaluated by real users in days, not weeks. The keyword is functional. A prototype that looks like the product but does not behave like it gives incomplete information.
